Transfer Station System


In 2009, the Township converted all waste sites except Lanark Village into transfer stations.

Transfer stations maintain existing service levels but eliminate the need to cover garbage on a daily basis at each landfill site as garbage is transported offsite for land filling at one active landfill. This system reduces costs and should increase existing landfill capacity by about 25% due to better garbage compaction at the active site. An extra 25% capacity means about 5 additional years of landfill capacity in Lanark Highlands.
