IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ELECTORS
Township of Lanark Highlands
Municipal Election
For Immediate Release

Posted on October 12, 2018

I have received requests for clarification as to the number of candidate names on the ballot for the office of Mayor. These requests arose from an advertisement in the September 11th, 2018 edition of the Lanark Era, paid for by one of the candidates, Brian Stewart, in which he stated, “I am announcing my withdrawal as a candidate for Mayor.”

Under the Municipal Elections Act, the deadline for a certified candidate to withdraw his/her name was July 27th, 2018 at 2 p.m. The only exception would be if a certified candidate for an office, before the close of voting on voting day, dies or becomes ineligible to hold the office.

There were three candidates certified for the office of Mayor and none of the three had withdrawn by the deadline. Therefore, there are three names on the ballot for the office of Mayor. In alphabetical order, they are: Terry Lee Donaldson, Peter McLaren, and Brian Stewart.

In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, votes for each of the three candidates will be counted, and the Clerk will declare the candidate who receives the highest number of votes to be elected.

Municipal Election
For Immediate Release
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO THIRD PARTY ADVERTISERS
DEADLINE TO REGISTER - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19th, 2018 4:30 p.m.

Posted on October 12, 2018

It has been brought to my attention that paid advertisements promoting or mentioning candidates in the municipal election, which would fit the definition of “third party advertising” under the Municipal Elections Act , have been placed in local papers by individuals (noncandidates) who have not registered as a “third party advertiser” as required under the Act.

Please refer to information regarding third party advertisers on the Township’s website at:
https://www.lanarkhighlands.ca/Elections/ThirdPartyAdvertisers.php

If you are a third party and have “advertised”, as defined in the Municipal Elections Act, or if you will be doing so as a third party prior to or on election day, October 22, 2018, you must register as a third party advertiser in person at the Township office no later than Friday, October 19, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. You must also comply with all of the other requirements pertaining to third party advertisers as specified in the Act.

Please see the forms to complete and other requirements at the above link. If you cannot print the forms, they are available for you to complete at the Township office. You will also be given a package of information for third party advertisers.

Although third party advertisers are required to register before advertising, if you have already “advertised”, I request that you register as a third party advertiser before the October 19th deadline. Please ask at the front desk for the Returning Officer or one of our two Deputy Returning Officers. The Township office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office is located at 75 George Street, Lanark Ontario.

If you have any questions pertaining to third party advertising that cannot be answered by reference to the Township’s website, you may contact me by phone or email.
