Forecasted Precipitation Could Increase Flows and Reduce Ice Thickness

January 10, 2020 — Forecasts across the Mississippi and Carp River watersheds are calling for significant volumes of mixed precipitation over the weekend.

There remains considerable uncertainty of whether this precipitation will arrive as snow, ice or rain.  Flows are anticipated to increase but the timing and magnitude will depend on the amount of rainfall received.

Ice thickness can change drastically due to increased flows and rising temperatures.  The shoreline adjacent to lakes, rivers and creeks is very slippery and poses a serious hazard.  Falling into open water could result in hypothermia or drowning.

The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) reminds the public to exercise extreme caution around all water bodies:

  • The public and pets should stay off all frozen water bodies.
  • Parents are urged to remind children about the dangers of playing on or near ice covered surfaces and open water.

No significant flooding is anticipated at this time, although, rainfall can cause ice jams to occur along the river.  This can cause water levels to rise quickly without warning.  Residents in flood prone areas are advised to maintain a close watch on levels and flows and take the necessary precautions to protect their property by:

  • Ensuring sump pumps are clear and in good working condition
  • Removing or securing items that might float away as flows increase.

Please note that the MVCA does not monitor ice conditions.  The MVCA’s Flood Forecasting and Warning program monitors weather conditions and snowpack, estimates high water conditions and issues watershed conditions messages.

Our office will be closed from Friday January 10th at 4:30 pm until Monday January 13th at 8:30 am.  However, staff will be on call throughout the weekend to monitor levels, respond to requests and operate dams if required.

This Watershed Conditions Statement is effect until the end of the day on Monday January 13, 2020 or an update is issued.  Please visit the MVCA’s website for more information on:
